Bringing the Campaign Home
It’s time to bring the campaign home. This was today’s message from Michael Nitz, United Way Campaign Chair. He reminded us that in only four short weeks Thunder Bay and area residents will be celebrating New Year’s Eve. It will mark the end of the year, the end of the season, and coincidentally the end of the United Way’s 2014 fundraising campaign. Between now and then we will all be caught up in the happy festivities of this busy holiday season, but it is still important to take a moment to help others.
In the company of his family at Sears Canada Inc. on Wednesday Nitz spoke with passion about what he had learned from visiting every one of the 29 United Way Funded Agencies. “Many of us are so lucky to have good health and families around us – but who knows what tomorrow might bring our way? You never know when life may take a turn and you may find yourself in need of help. His words were echoed by his wife Dawn, a Superior North EMS paramedic, who shared experiences of emergency responders who see the need in our community first-hand every day.
The 2014 Chair was pleased to say that the response to the campaign so far has reached $1.4 million, over half of the target that was set in September. These programs are often a lifeline for local people with nowhere else to turn; helping them to weather the storm and to make it through to have a better life. From assisting an abused woman to escape a violent domestic situation, to giving a nutritious breakfast and snacks to hungry young students, or providing counselling to help people recover from tragedy and loss, countless people rely on the services United Way supports.
We know there are many people who plan to give before December 31st. We are asking you to be one of them. Now is the time to bring the campaign home for the 1 in 3 people in our community who, in the New Year, will need the services provided by the United Way family of agencies. “From our family to all the families in our community – let’s bring it home now. Let’s do all that we can to make sure EVERYONE can have a happy new year! Please give generously to United Way today.” said Nitz and his wife.
