Program FAQ

Q: Where is the Sponsored Employee physically located?

A: The Sponsored Employee Team works out of the United Way office at 1006– 715 Hewitson Street.

Q: What is the length of the program?

A: The term of the Sponsored Employee Program is 16 weeks, the last Monday in August to the third Friday in December, including training.

Q: Will our candidate still be able to carry their regular work load?

A: The Sponsored Employee secondment is a full-time assignment, which means the individual will not be able to continue with his or her regular duties during the secondment.

Q: Who pays the Sponsored Employee's salary and incidental costs?

A: Sponsoring organizations continue to pay their employees' salaries during the secondment to United Way. Sponsoring organizations are also asked to cover any incidental expenses incurred (such as parking and mileage, or lunch meeting costs).

Q: Who do the Sponsored Employees report to?

A: Each sponsored employee works in collaboration with United Way's professional Fundraising Managers. That individual acts as a coach and a mentor throughout the program. Each Sponsored Employee will receive feedback through an evaluation process.

Q: What is the role of the Sponsored Employee?

A: Sponsored Employees provide support to approximately 300 United Way Workplace Campaigns. These individuals collaborate with Fundraising Managers to implement successful strategies and maintain on-going relationships with a portfolio of accounts, providing direction and support. Direct sales, public speaking, training, and problem solving may be involved. They will be involved in special events, organizing, and implementing each event in collaboration with the United Way staff.

Q: Why is the first week of training so important? What if my candidate misses the week or part of it ?

A: Week One (SE Training) is an intense immersion into fundraising techniques to ensure success in the coming campaign. We provide product knowledge, arrange agency visits, share campaign best practices and proven fundraising strategies as well as provide skill development opportunities i.e public speaking.

All Sponsored Employees must be prepared and equipped to begin meeting workplace volunteers once they arrive at our offices. It is next to impossible to re-create this first week. We want to ensure all candidates have the best experience possible and maximize every opportunity. That is why Sponsored Employee Training is mandatory.
