Fort William Historical Park, in partnership with the Lakehead Canoe Club, is thrilled to present Northern Ontario’s debut Ice Dragon Boat Challenge at Fort William Historical Park’s Voyageur Winter Carnival February 15th, 16th & 17th, 2020.

The thrill of competition will take over the frozen Kaministiquia River as teams race in specially designed dragon boats sporting ice blades propelled by up to 10 paddlers with ice pick paddles. Join us as a competitor or come out and show your support for the athletes. Thunder Bay’s first Ice Dragon Boat Challenge supports the United Way of Thunder Bay and the Lakehead Canoe Club.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three (3) teams in both the Youth and Adult categories.

Along with the Ice Dragon Boat Challenge, the Voyageur Winter Carnival will feature a multitude of family activities, entertainment and contest

Date: February 15 – 17, 2020
Registration Deadline: January 24, 2020 at 4pm
Fee / Fundraising: Registration is $500 per team, with a team commitment to fundraise an additional $500
Teams & Categories: Two team categories will be offered, Youth (Ages 12-17) and Adult (18+). Each team is comprised of up to 10 paddlers, one (1) drummer, and one (1) steers person. A minimum of six (6) paddlers is required to race. Two (2) spare paddlers may be included on the team roster. If required, a steers person can be provided. Each registered team member will receive a three-day weekend pass to the Voyageur Winter Carnival.
Team Prcatice Times: Each team will have one (1) scheduled practice time prior to races for the associated age category. Youth practices will begin at 10:00am on Saturday, February 15th. Adult practices will begin at 10:00am on Sunday, February 16th. Practice schedules will be emailed to the Team Captain one week prior to the event
Team Races: Each team will compete in two (2) races in their age category. Youth races will begin at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 15th. Adult races will begin at 1:00pm on Sunday, February 16th. Teams that advance to the finals with compete in additional races on Monday, February 17th. The number of races is subject to change, dependent on weather and ice conditions.
