“When I retired after 30 plus years of neonatal nursing, I was not prepared for the negative feelings of self worth that I had. I knew I needed something to make me feel like I was still a productive member of society and Our Kids Count was just what I needed, their dedication to young families is amazing, they work tirelessly to improve the lives of children and their families. When I first started volunteering with OKC it was with the young parents program, which was something I was very familiar with because I was a teenage mom. Our Kids Count don’t just give handouts to these young families they provide them with the skills needed to care for their children including nutrition and cooking classes, which is all done in a proactive environment of respect and encouragement. I am amazed everyday at the positive changes in these young people’s lives after they get involved with the programs at Our Kids Count.

When OKC took over the face painting program, I was asked if I wanted to volunteer, well my first reaction was no way but….fast forward 6 years and I can not imagine not Facepainting. When the young children first look in the mirror and see what you’ve face-painted their smile and excitement makes your heart swell. Volunteering with Our Kids Count has brought so many positive changes to my life, and I am so thankful to them for allowing me the opportunity to even in a small way make a difference in a child’s life.”
