A Place For Kids

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Thunder Bay strives to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. With help from your gifts to the United Way, The Boys & Girls Clubs offer the following programs in Thunder Bay:  Child Nutrition Program (Breakfast Clubs), Community Outreach Programs, Program Integration, Windsor main location, and Vale Satellite location.

These programs make an incredible impact for children in our community. Here is one family’s story.

A local mother fell upon hard times and was no longer able to care for her two children. The siblings were then placed with their grandfather who took over caring for them. Shortly after the children had moved in, the grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and could no longer work. With the family’s source of income removed there was little opportunity to provide safe recreational activities for the children to take part in. Thankfully they found the Boys & Girls Clubs which was able to send them to camp, provide them with guitar lessons and ensured their safety by having them participate in a safe arrival program. During a very difficult time for the family these programs gave the siblings a chance to escape the stress of their situation and have fun in a safe and supportive environment. Without the help from the United Way, the Clubs said it would have been difficult to offer all of the programs needed to help local children. Funding from United Way has given many children and youth from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn life skills, attend workshops, eat healthy meals at the supper club and participate in skill building recreational opportunities. Many families need the free programs that are offered as they cannot afford to pay for them. The Boys & Girls Clubs feels a sense of pride when families are comfortable bringing the kids there instead of keeping them at home and not participating in activities that will help them.

United Way of Thunder Bay is leading the way to a better community by improving the quality of life for all local people. By collaborating with community partners, we are leading the way to addressing social issues in our community and investing in three critical areas: Poverty, Kids and Strong Communities. Donations to the United Way are strategically invested across Thunder Bay to many vital programs and initiatives in these areas, creating a social safety net that works to achieve lasting change for our neighbours, families and friends.
