Personal Health and Wellness
Community Living Thunder Bay supports Personal Health & Wellness opportunities for Persons with Disabilities and their families. The Healthy Lifestyles Program gives people with intellectual disabilities the support and development around healthy lifestyles education, nutrition promotion, mental health awareness, living and life skills development. The important aspects of the program currently and in the past have been integrated into fun and adventurous activities in the summer months with the forward intent of growing the program to encompass opportunities throughout the year.
This year the Healthy Lifestyles Program included 23 healthy living specific activity plans with 73 participants. People had the experience to be involved in many different and fun environments to explore opportunities for personal wellness and independence. These environments included destinations such as Duluth, Minneapolis, Winnipeg, Wilderness Discovery Camp, Dog Lake Resort, and Quetico Camp Ground. For many families who are care givers, the Healthy Lifestyles Program offers them that support to enhance the lives of their children. Opportunities in the program help to create supportive relationships with other families dealing with the challenges of being caregivers for persons with special needs.
Below is one experience involving our youth in Thunder Bay with healthy lifestyles and community involvement:
“ I wanted to thank you and the Healthy Lifestyles Program for the opportunity to have such a fun and rewarding experience this past week. I had the personal opportunity to support and mentor three amazing young men with living skills, building communication and problem solving abilities while at the same time developing new friendships and connections within our own community. I left this trip with new friendships and a deeper understanding of being involved in people’s lives to make a difference. Thanks guys!”
